Suspicions of a judge during the pre-trial investigation into possible corruption

The pre-trial investigation into possible criminal offenses of a corrupt nature - abuse, bribery and trade in influence is conducted by the officials of the Šiauliai Department of the Special Investigation Service (hereinafter – STT).

During the investigation of possible corrupt activities – attempts by natural persons who used their acquaintances and other probable influence to affect the court decision, data on possible criminal actions of a judge was obtained.

On Monday, the President of the Republic of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda suspended powers and lifted immunity of Raimundas Jurgaitis, the judge of Šiauliai Regional Court. He is suspected of abuse of powers and bribery. Another 4 persons are suspected of trading in influence and bribery.

The officials of the Šiauliai Department of the STT were performing procedural actions. Surveys, searches at workplaces and homes of the persons were carried out, and documents relevant to the investigation were taken.

The pre-trial investigation is under control and direction of the prosecutor of the Organised Crime and Corruption Investigation Department of the General Prosecutor's Office.

According to the presumption of innocence, a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court.
