The third and the last one Intersessional meeting of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption on preparations for the special session of the General Assembly against corruption (UNGASS2021) was organized by the secretariat of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime on 22-23 of February, 2021.
The meeting was held in a hybrid format – in person in Vienna (Austria) and online.
The last meeting before UNGASS was dedicated to discuss topics such as: The way forward after 15 years of UNCAC’s entry into force; Beneficial ownership transparency and the role of the private sector in supporting anticorruption efforts, Measures to address impunity, including by strengthening the independence, transparency and integrity of the judiciary and enhancing the role of oversight bodies, such as state audit institutions; Harnessing the full potential of education and technology in efforts to prevent and combat corruption.
Among panelists from USA, Columbia, Germany, United Arab Emirates, Russian Federation, China and other countries, the Deputy Director of the Lithuanian Special Investigations Service Egidijus Radzevičius presented the "Transparency Academy" Initiative and shared the good practices of anti-corruption training and awareness raising.
UNGASS will be held from 2 to 4 June 2021 in New York. During the special session a concise and action-oriented political declaration, agreed upon in advance by consensus through intergovernmental negotiations under the auspices of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption, shall be adopted.
